What is LipoSmooth®? LipoSmooth® is a non-invasive treatment for the treatment of fat deposits, the appearance of cellulite and rehabilitation of tissue fibrosis and lymphatic drainage. LipoSmooth® works through a combination of vacuum massage, electro muscle stimulation and ultrasound application to the treated area.

How does it work? LipoSmooth® uses ultrasound to penetrate the adipose tissue and to break up the triglycerides in the fat cells into free fatty acids and glycerol, this is a well documented effect of ultrasound on fat cells. The fat cells can then release the free fatty acids in to the lymphatic system.

Ultrasound is used in other areas in medicine for reducing tissue fibrosis and to soften connective tissue. The softening effect on tissues often helps to improve the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin texture in previously operated areas. Ultrasound is effective to reduce scar tissue following invasive procedures such as liposuction or smart lipo. In patients who had liposuction or smart/laser liposuction in the past the treatment might help to improve lymphatic drainage, unevenness and loss of skin tone in the previously treated area. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee any improvements in this case due to the varying degree of subcutaneous scar formation and damage to the lymphatic system after invasive fat reduction treatments.

In areas with cellulite LipoSmooth® helps to break down the tissue fibrosis and re-establishes healthy tissue conditions by improving circulation and lymphatic drainage. In conjunction with the ultrasound we apply vacuum massage and lymphatic stimulation, according to a well defined, medically documented protocol.

The lymphatic system acts as an important reservoir for the fatty acids once leaving the fat cells. At the beginning of the treatment the therapist will apply the vacuum massage to increase the circulation in the treated area and to maximise lymphatic flow. This treatment is similar to Endermologie® or LPG®.

Origins and Maintenance Like with any other cosmetic treatment it makes sense to maintain the results of the initial treatment session. Most of the problems we are treating are directly or indirectly connected to diet, lifestyle, level of exercise but also to your individual tendency to metabolize and store fat in certain areas of your body.

Your predisposition for cellulite is something we cannot change, but we can improve it tremendously. Just as you would not expect your body to be slim, toned and athletic for the rest of you life after visiting a gym once, you would have to accept that some areas of your body might need more attention than others.

The best way to understand how LipoSmooth® works is to regard this treatment as a detoxifying treatment for your fat tissue and as a booster to your metabolism, your lymphatic system and your digestion. Our aim is to create a more healthy tissue with better circulation which prevents the return of the cellulite.

Origins of stubborn fat and cellulite The tendency to develop cellulite and store fat in certain areas is dependent on a variety of factors. Some of them are genetic and some are influenced by external factors.

A. Predisposing Factors
1. Gender: Women are more likely to develop cellulite.
2. Heredity: Cellulite often is similar among females within the same family.
3. Race: Caucasian women are more likely to develop cellulite than Asian or African-American women.
4. Subcutaneous fat: More adipose tissue in the subcutaneous layer enhances the appearance of cellulite on the skin surface.
5. Age: Women begin to develop cellulite after puberty as part of normal anatomical and physiological development. Cellulite increases in severity with aging as a reflection of the thinning of the epidermis.

B. Influences
1. Hormones, specifically oestrogen is known to stimulate fat tissue and inhibit lipolysis (breaking down fat cells) resulting in enlarged fat cells. This may explain the onset of cellulite at puberty, the condition being more prevalent in females, and the exacerbation of cellulite with pregnancy, nursing, menstruation and oestrogen therapy (oral contraceptive use and hormone replacement).
2. Circulation, cellulite may develop in predisposed areas when circulation and lymphatic drainage have been decreased. Reduction in blood supply increases water retention within the subcutaneous fat layer. This causes further stress on the surrounding connective tissue fibres, which accentuates skin irregularities. Many of the currently accepted cellulite therapies target deficiencies in lymphatic drainage and microvascular circulation.

C. Diet
Fat can only enter the fat cell in the presence of carbohydrates, which causes the excretion of insulin, which in turn opens the door for fat to enter the fat cells. It is however extremely difficult in our present times to eliminate simple carbohydrates, sugars, wheat, gluten and other the byproducts of processed food from your diet.

Results and Maintenance Even if you manage to reduce the intake of carbohydrates in your diet and have a more healthy and active lifestyle you will always be able to gain additional improvements with every session of LipoSmooth®.

Since LipoSmooth® is a treatment that has great overall health benefits by improving tissue circulation and lymphatic drainage as well as reducing fat cell size, maintenance is definitely recommended. Most of our patients have maintained and improved the initial results with a 6-9 monthly maintenance program. Our treatment is designed to improve overall health and tissue conditions in the treated areas. It is only natural that you would want to make sure you have the best possible results for your lifestyle.

1. Initially, we see our patients between the 6 month and 9 month time period. The best clinical results can be achieved for you during this period. If you allow the initial LipoSmooth® results to completely wear off, it is difficult for the therapist to be able to see how your individual treatment area reacted and therefore optimal results for YOUR body can be more difficult to achieve.

2. LipoSmooth® requires a special technique in order to customize the treatment protocol to your individual body shape and tissue structure. Thus, it is important that your therapist sees you in order to make sure that you can achieve the best possible results for your individual body shape, lifestyle and dietary habits. It is only at this point that the LipoSmooth® therapist can customize the treatment to give you the best effect for your body.

Liposmooth: Important Information Prior to Treatment
Important information to read prior to treatmentent with Mars/LipoSmooth We must inform you that when you are treated with the MARS/LipoSmooth therapy system you will be exposed to pulsed Ultra Sound Waves at a frequency of 28.8kHz, which can penetrated the skin to a layer of up to 5cm. This frequency of ultrasound has several effects that are useful for the treatment of cellulite and localized fatty deposits by acting on triglycerides in fat cells.
• Sonophoresis: Ultrasound allows better penetration of the cutaneous barrier for the active ingredients in a water soluble gel, applied prior to the treatment
• Fibrolytic effects: Ultrasound is used in other areas of medicine for its effect on softening hardened and fibrotic (incapsulated) tissue. Defibrosing.Deep micro massage can break up fibrotic connective tissue.
• Local draining: Reflex inhibition of the orthosympathetic system. This promotes local capillary vasodilation which increases circulation in the treated area.
• Lipolysis: Ultrasound splits the large triglyceride molecules in the fat cells into free fatty acids without altering the cells. This way the fat can leave the fat cells.
• Metabolic effect: Stimulation of exchanges and increased enzymatic activity increases metabolic rate in the treated area.

MARS/LipoSmooth Ultrasound treatments should not be used in the following cases:

1. Those who use

a. Pace Makers for heart conditions
b. Electronic stimulator for bladder function
c. Metal implants in any area of the body
